“Buck breaks into classroom, hits teacher”
It was a scary morning on a day meant for unusual sightings. A Halloween intruder crashed into a classroom at Canandaigua Elementary School. An eight point buck jumped through a window into a classroom.
“All the sudden I heard this big smash. I looked down and there was a deer,” student Carlee Sossong said.
The students in Mrs. Bay’s 5th grade class at Canandaigua Elementary School were taking a reading test Friday morning when a deer came crashing into their classroom sending glass flying through the air.
“I got really scared, and I thought something really bad was happening like when we practice the tornado drills and stuff” so I hid under my desk,” Sossong said.
The deer leapt through a window at least three feet high and hit the teacher when it landed.
The deer got tangled in mini-blinds and was thrashing on the ground. Many of the children were screaming. For a few students it took awhile to realize what was inside their classroom.“I finally noticed it was a moose, I mean deer, and it was really big, like it tipped over everything,” Michael Thompson said.
Student Zach Scott said, “I was just stunned. I thought it didn’t even happen.”
The deer didn’t stay inside for very long. When another teacher opened the classroom door the deer got startled and jumped back out the window.
“The main thing is that every child is safe and were really grateful that would could have been a very difficult situation and very dangerous situation was not,” Andy Thomas with the Canandaigua School District said.
The teacher was taken to F.F. Thompson Hospital but returned to the classroom in time for the Halloween party, and she had a treat for her students. Thanks to that deer they didn’t have to finish their reading test.
“My teacher was like no more of these and she ripped them up,” Sossong said.
The kids were checked out by the nurse, and they are all okay and so was Mrs. Bay. As for the deer, someone saw it run into the woods.
