Some big songs have been #1 this weekend

I’m liking the songs from 1984, 1994, and 1999, but I feel that 2009 is reminiscent of 1989 when Paula Abdul was still popular. No matter. You just have to love the progression of titles.

• 1989: Paula Abdul “Forever Your Girl” (Prev- Bon Jovi “I’ll Be There For You”, Next- Cyndi Lauper “Time After Time”)
• 1994: All-4-One “I Swear” (Prev- Ace of Base “The Sign”, Next- Lisa Loeb “I Do”)
• 1999: Ricky Martin “Livin’ la Vida Loca” (Prev. TLC “No Scrubs”)
• 2004: Usher “Burn” (Prev. Usher “Yeah!”)
• 2009: Black Eyed Peas “Boom Boom Pow” (Prev. Lady Gaga “Poker Face”)

25 years ago, we were celebratory. What were we celebrating? Patrick Swayze in Footloose (yes, this song was in the movie). Five years later, the subject still was a man, but this time Paula added a deeper love element. All was well. The mid-90′s found an even more devotional love song, but perfection is lost. The lyrics suggest a few lapses in commitment. Slowly, the crazy life emerged with Ricky Martin in 1999. He was the scrub that TLC did not want. And culture embraced him. Relationship problems continued into the new millennium, as evidenced by Usher’s 2004 hit “Burn”. Now, with 2010 on the horizon, we enter a time of confusion. Lady Gaga sings of masking true intentions, and the Black Eyed Peas follow with a meaningless song. I’m sure Deniece Williams had the “Boom Boom Pow” in 1984, but she spread it with elegance and style.
